A Great Season

We lost our last game of the season. The consolation is that every team but one loses their last game of the season.

Once again the beer, food, bags and company at the postgame were exceptional. Rumor has it that we played like the Black Sox to get there as soon as possible. Fact has it that we did not want the night to end and a few Cougars brought the party into the next day. You don't need to attend B school to know that the graph of Cougar productivity on Wednesday has an inverse relationship to the Cougar postgame party on Tuesday.

Our postgames have come a long way from that first night. That night there were no snacks, bags, chairs, wives, or kids. Nope, we were just shivering on my front lawn in 40 degree weather drinking ice cold beer analyzing what exactly we signed up for in this league. It was about midseason when the snacks, families, friends and Joe D. showed up, which is about the time we made a Spinal Tap move and turned our dial to 11. I appreciate everyone coming through and making Tuesdays into highly attended events for all. It was so great that our fan base grew steadily throughout the year. Our fans spin the Howard Park turnstiles as much as any other team.

It was truly a great season. Like I have said a few times, I put this team together primarily for social reasons and had hoped to be somewhat competitive. I never envisioned what we actually accomplished as a team on and off the field. Friendships were forged and strengthened and, oh, by the way, we won 3 games along the way. We also lost enough games to teach our youngsters to count past their 10 fingers. We did not fail though. As Clarence wrote to George in It's A Wonderful Life, "Remember, no man is a failure who has friends."

Right now you are saying, "All right already, enough of the sappiness, just tell me when the next party is." Ok, ok. The Cougar Awards Banquet will be held after Labor Day on a weekend night at Pinstripes for some Cougar competition and camaraderie. All Cougars are invited and the team is invited too. Details and date to follow soon.

Also, there has been talk of a Cougar bag tourney, a Cougar poker game and a Cougar Vegas trip. Sold! I am all-in. In the meantime, if you are having softball withdrawals, you can always relive the season on the web. http://deadcougars.blogspot.com/

The entire Radtke family is sporting the new Cougars hats today. Thanks so very much for the thoughtful gift.

It was a perfect ending to have all 15 of us out there yesterday. Enjoy the team picture. Congratulations to all for such a great season.

"Winning is like, you know, better than losing!"

"Winning is like, you know, better than losing!"
- Nuke LaLoosh

Take a moment to marvel at the game ball from our first victory and have another look at the recap from that game. It felt great to beat those dastardly Beavers. We will do it again tonight and then go after the Brew-Ha's.

I will be out there by 6:00pm to warmup for our first game at 6:45. Our second game is at 8:00.

Martin is holding the postgame fiesta (732 Park Avenue) with Trouter supplying the cervezas.

Hoosier Cougars

Hoosiers may be the best sports movie ever made. It is not a precise comparison but there are a handful of parallels between the Cougars and Hoosiers.
  • We are all white
  • Our ball is almost as big as a basketball
  • Our season also starts out badly with several losses
  • We have had various Jimmy Chitwood impersonations
  • Hickory and Wilmette share a love for their respective sports
  • We are also underdogs
  • Like the actors, we are all amateurs
  • Coach Dale was out of the game for many years - I last played in 1991.
  • Quote from assistant coach Wilbur "Shooter" Flatch: "I know everything there is to know about the greatest game ever invented."
  • Blog quote from swing coach Joe D.: "The best form of baseball ever devised is the Chicago 16-inch bare handed version."
  • We can drink like Shooter
Over the weekend, enjoy these outstanding clips.

Playoff Thrills

Joe D. posted the following entry on his blog recently. This story embodies the thrill of playoff softball.

One crazy softball night in 1976.Our Maulers team was in the playoffs for both the Schaumburg and Mt Prospect leagues, and the schedules conflicted. On the first night we were scheduled to play in Mt Prospect at 6pm and 9:30, and also scheduled to play in Schaumburg at 7:30 and 8:30. Rather than forfeit we decided to play it by ear, so if one game was not going well we would just quit and head for the other town.

Our first game was against the Hoskins Chevy Satyrs, a team that had beaten us earlier this year. Our strategy was to avoid any delays, no throwing the ball around between innings, no taking hittable pitches, and somehow we came away with a narrow win, and raced to our cars, and luckily somehow made most of the stoplights, getting to Schaumburg only 4 minutes before forfeit time. No warmups, play ball. The Foxes pounced on us, showing no mercy, and forced us to come from behind with 3 runs in the last inning to tie the score. The game went 10 innings, and we finally won by one run. We then had to choose whether to hang around for the next game or forfeit and head to Mt Prospect. Since it was double elimination we decided to take a forfeit. That gave us a little bit of time for our convoy to get to Mt Prospect, but every red light was excruciating while we watched the clocks tick away towards game time. We once again arrived 4 minutes before forfeit time, no warmups, play ball. Somehow we won another one run game against Scanda House, so incredibly we were still alive in both playoffs.

On the following night we got revenge on the McGaffers who beat us in the first round, to get to the Mt Prospect finals against the Shooters, who we had to beat twice due to the double elimination format, and we did that.

Guess who our opponents were for the Schaumburg finals the following night? It was the Shooters/Scrappers again, and again we beat them twice to win both titles.

We were completely out of energy, but it no longer mattered, the season was over, and the beer never tasted any better.

Come for the Postgame, Stay for the Game

Game Summary
We lost.

One great highlight was that we had so many Cougar wives out there. They either really enjoy our team or they thought we were giving away Cougarlicious t-shirts for Fan Appreciation Night.

Postgame Summary
The Danielsen family lived up to the nickname Postgame Allstars. Kristen and Jeff did share with me that they were a bit worried that the team would not show up for the party given that we had to cross the busy street and go to a foreign area. But being the sharp Cougars that we are, most of us ran a Mapquest before the game and travelled in pairs.

The Cougar postgames are unrivaled. I thought 60 beers would be enough for a bunch of responsible professionals on a Tuesday. I was wrong. In fact, the Cougars may have swing by Betty Ford for a detox before the playoffs. I see barrels of beer and kegstands in our future at this pace.

Pizza on the grill was plentiful, beer was in the coolers were cold and bags were flying. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Flannery showed us the three finger, open stance, yoga pants Baggo technique that ruled the night.

For the postgame next week Martin is hosting and Trout is beering.

Next Game
Beavers, Tuesday, 6:45pm

When I mentioned to Julie that we were playing the Beavers, she was disappointed she could not make it because of her restraining order. She has behaved at the last couple games and is appealing the ruling.

This is a huge rematch for us. I am sure they don't like us and we aren't too fond of them. We are going to play a calm, cool and collected game and come out with a notch in the left hand column so we can play the Brew-Ha's at 8:00pm.

You will be hearing from my inner Lombardi leading up to this big game.

Pregame, Game, Postgame

We have SLAM tonight at 6:45pm and I will be out there about 5:45pm to warmup.

Last week's postgame partiers were able to scout our opponent and what they saw were high arcs from their pitcher (especially after two strikes), good defense and strong swings from just over half the team. We played well against SLAM previously and we will have the confidence to hit them hard again. We have been playing energized ball out there and need to keep it up to move up in the standings.

Tonight's postgame beer is already on ice and after my purchase yesterday, I think Schaefer's may sponsor our team next year. "Beers Around the World" is the theme tonight. Jeff "Postgame Allstar" Danielsen will be hosting the festivities.

In other news, the Radtke family buzzed by the No Glove Nationals on Saturday. Here are a few notes from the visit.
  • Strong, quick and smart was the theme that I saw out there. Notice I did not say young. Most of these guys have turned 21 twice, have real jobs that require physical strength (unlike me) and can drink beer by the gallon (like my brother). They must spend the rest of their time at the gym, bar or softball fields.
  • There was an arc limit and they started with a 0-0 count, which are two things that the Cougars could have used earlier in the season. That said, these guys pounded the ball hard into the ground with tomahawk chops that skipped right between the fielders and strong line drives in the gaps.
  • Aggressive baserunning was key. Many hit and runs were executed. Not sure if we are there yet but I am sure Martin will lead the way with his daring wheels.
  • The Forest Park softball fields and adjacent swimming pool rival anything we have in Wilmette. This is also where the 16-inch Softball Hall of fame will be housed. http://www.16inchsoftballhof.com/
  • Cool uniforms (or at least jerseys) are important for next year. We may as well look the part of a softball team. I am not sure what we will end up with yet, but our female fans would look good in any of these. http://shop.cafepress.com/cougar?cmp=KNC-G-PC-ZOO
  • The food and drink were excellent. I downed a hot dog with onions and mustard, a double hulled steak taco with hot sauce, three beers and an ice cream. A great afternoon.

Cougar News

Our next game is on Tuesday at 6:45pm against SLAM.

The upside is that the Cougars were able to scout SLAM on Tuesday night against the Hitmen. The downside is that we have our toughest position game so far. SLAM has only lost three games but up until recently our biggest run output was against them.

Here are a few items need some action:

  • I have three people interested in another early morning practice on Sunday at 7:15am. Let me know if you will be out there.
  • Although I am in denial, it is true that the season is only going to last 2-3 more weeks. We need to plan and have our first annual Cougar Awards Banquet. I am taking any and all suggestions for location. One suggestion for Depot Nuevo has been recognized. Also, we need to pick a date. It needs to be a date that everyone can be there. I suggest September 2, 3 or 4 (the Tu, We, Th, after Labor Day). Let me know your thoughts.
  • Lastly, by popular demand (two people) I have put all of the Cougar news and updates in one convenient place. http://deadcougars.blogspot.com/

"I Think The Cougars Are A Warm Weather Team"

"I Think The Cougars Are A Warm Weather Team"
- Greg Otsuka quote from after our April 29th opening day 35-1 loss in 40 degree weather.

After a bit of research, it turns out Greg is right. According to the Canadian government agency that collects cougar-related data, warm weather causes a jump in cougar attacks.

The warm weather last night fueled our 8-5 assault on our opponent and now fetches us a 3-1 record in July. We are also undefeated in position games and rematches.

Speaking of violence, according to the official scorebook Marc has officially not been present for our two victories. He decided to pull a Doug Plank on the second baseman early in the game on a force out and was promptly booted from the game by the umpire. After the game, Marc indicated that he thought it was perfectly fine to knock the defensive player silly because Jeremy did to the catcher on the Hitmen.

Unquestionably, the hero of the game was our man "Big Z" Lipsey. Pete brought out his "good Carlos" with a right arm that threw some lofty strikes, walking only one, and when we were down 5-3 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 6th, he unloaded a shot to left center for a grand slam that put us ahead for good. It was absolutely unbelievable! One of the most exciting moments of the year!

Other offensive highlights include the following.

  • We were down 5-1 in the top of the 6th and before Lipsey nailed his granny (who ironically is a cougar, ahem), we had hits from Otsuka, Trout, McDonnell, Hoglund (with a reprise of the Cowboy Dance) and Oxer, which yielded us two runs to get us to 5-3.
  • It was Oxer's first run of the season. It would have been his second if it wasn't for the aforementioned play at the plate.
  • Also, in the 6th, we batted around the order for the first time this season. Danielsen led off the 6th with an out but came up again later in the inning with me on 1B and got a hit for our final run.

Our defense came through once again as the young, strong and quick Chieftons sprayed hard shots around the field.

  • Our outfield was flawless with Otsuka, Trout and McDonnell covering the green pasture with ease.
  • In CF, Trouter had a bullet throw to Marc at third that almost gunned out the runner.
  • Flannery was an all-purpose player while playing three positions.
  • I was fired up about my first double play of the season (well, first one on defense).

On the injury front, it looks like Trouter will be on the DL for at least next week. He pulled a groin (his own thankfully) during our big inning. What is very interesting is that Mike Flynn on the Hitmen, who is Trout's college roommate and current co-worker also has a pulled groin. Rumor has it that Bobis isn't the only one with an Open Stance video.

Jeff "Open Stance" Bobis, who was not supposed to show up, pulled an Oxer and rushed to make the postgame festivities after swilling a number of employer mandated beers. Little did he know he would be rushed into duty to make our then 9-person squad a full 10. He played a fine half inning and like the sick kid who shows up for last period, he kept his Ripken practice and game attendance streak alive.

The Cougar contingent was disappointed that a few of our pack were unable to attend.

  • Martin was on the high waters of Lake Michigan sailing in the 100th Race to Mackinac.
  • Fortier was transacting business in Tokyo where just moments ago he enjoyed a serious earthquake.
  • Melchiorre was enjoying a concert with a former Cougar and I think got to go backstage and meet John Mellencamp.
  • Lipinski was taking a client to dinner and did everything he could to get out of it.

From what I hear and heard, the Cougars had a great postgame in the picnic area of Field 1. I did a favor for our friends on the Hitmen and was not able to enjoy my first beer until about 10pm. You all should know that I bleed Cougar blood and loved the cheering section while I played LF and raced around the bases.

Our fans are the greatest! I really appreciate my Friday night captains, Catherine and Robert Levy, coming out to root on the Cougars each week. In fact, when I was playing 3B on one play and bobbled the ball a bit and was about to throw it (most likely wildly) to 1B, I am pretty sure I heard Robert yelled "HOLD IT!" and that was exactly what I did. Otherwise a run or runs would have scored. So thanks for that! We also had a number of Radtkes out at the park as well as the Lipsey family until little Ellie ended up on the DL.

I still have no clue what the deal is with these position games we have played the last two weeks. We have one more position game next week and then the playoffs are the two Tuesdays after that. Once the game time is announced for next week I will let you know.

For any other 16-inch softball nuts like me, the No Glove Nationals tournament is this weekend in Forest Park. The Radtke family will be heading out there sometime on Saturday. Ballpark food and beer will be served. I used to go to tournaments like this at Lou Boudreau Field in Harvey when I was a kid and it was a blast. This type of event is Chicago at its best. Let me know if you have interest and we can hook up.

Movin' On Up

The Cougars are livin' large. Recently, I was deciding what the Cougars' theme song should be and I had it down to The Eye of the Tiger (or Cougar) by Survivor or Mrs. Robinson by Simon and Garfunkel (think about it, keep thinking, there you go...). Now that we have just notched our third victory, we may use the theme song to the The Jeffersons with our own lyrics. The full game update will follow tomorrow.

Well we're movin on up,
To the big time.
The Dead Cougars are alive.
Movin on up,
To the big time.
We finally got a piece of the pie.

Sausage don't fry in the kitchen;
Beer in the cooler gettin' a chill.
Took a whole lotta tryin',
Just to get up that hill.
Now we're up in the big leagues,
Gettin' our turn at bat.
As long as we live, it's you and me baby,
There ain't nothin wrong with that.

Well we're movin on up,
To the big time.
The Dead Cougars are alive.
Movin on up,
To the big time.
We finally got a piece of the pie.

High Frequency Pings

Our game is at 8pm tonight and I plan to get out to the field with my brother at about 7pm to warmup. As you know we play The Chieftons, which is a team we took to extra innings and lost 4-2.

With a victory we would move up a spot and be tied for 9th place. With a loss we might be basement dwellers once again.

We have exactly 10 for the game tonight with the debut of The Joke Writer as our pitcher. Pete has been instructed to kiss the sky with his pitches, get high like Jimi Hendrix and put the Cheiftons in a green haze.

One quick story. So I was drinking beers Friday night with some folks who live on Washington and back up to Howard Park. A certain woman says to me, "So, did you have the Cougars out for a practice on Sunday morning?" I said, "Yup, we got out there at about 7am and were out there for a couple hours." She said, "Yes, (pause) I know, you woke me up!" "Really," I said, "There were only five of us, I didn't think we were talking that loud." She said, "It was the bat hitting the ball that woke me up." That is just awesome! At first I figured she heard a hungover Trouter holding court in left field holding his Venti Iced Americano and catching balls with his non-injured hand, then I realized our sweet swings are waking up the neighborhood. That is beautiful.

Let's be aggressive and hear some high frequency pings tonight! See you out there.

Let's Play Two!

Before we even showed up at the ballpark we had notched a 10-0 slaughter victory and moved into 10th place. That was fortunate for us because as of 6:40pm, there were more Brown Stars out there than Cougars. Many of our opponent's players were not told that the game was canceled and that they had forfeited. I have a feeling that they are not getting postgame updates either.

We ended up with 8 Brown Stars and 10 Cougars so we put together a practice game and tried for our second victory that day. We batted all 10 and gave them 2 players each inning for defense. We ended up with another victory outscoring them 10-7. It may have been a bit closer but the catcher we supplied thought it was more important to care for the safety of the Cougars heading for home plate by tidying up the the area rather than catching the throw to the plate. Thanks Dave!

As usual, the postgame was a highlight. Otsuka had InBev represented in one cooler and Bud in the other. The Cougars love beer! There were 54 beers on ice and 52 were consumed. It has also been discovered that the Cougars love mustard and this week's delivery device was some tasty sausage grilled up by Fortier. In fact, I was fortunate to have it again this morning while flossing.

After finishing a good portion of the beer, we decided to dial up an Oxer in Vegas because he would be the only Cougar possibly having more fun than us. Turns out he was at Midway and joined us for some midnight beers.

A couple other interesting facts we learned about our Cougar cohorts are that Hoglund invented the phrase "That's what she said" 20 years ago in Cali but forgot to get it trademarked. Also, for a number of years, Lipsey supported his entire existence on the road as a stand-up comic. Highlights can be seen here. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=+peter+lipsey&search_type=&aq=f

It was great to enjoy an action packed All-Star Game, which was complemented with baseball trivia such as, "Name the 5 Cy Young Award winners who are also convicted felons."

The night ended in the wee hours and once again we turned a Tuesday night into a Friday night. Thanks to Greg for the beers and to Steve for hosting and feeding us.

Once I hear from the park district, I will let you know the scoop for Tuesday.

Tuesday, July 15, 2008

I play angry and get angry when I don't play.

The Brown Stars are weak and Keefe wouldn't be able to get there on time (but they really appreciated the offer). Let's still get out to Field 2 by 6:30 sharp for a game of Cutthroat.

We have a definite 12 (Melchiorre maybe with Lipinksi and Oxer out). We have the field until 8:00 but we will probably finish up within a hour.

After the game, we will be heading to Fortier's house. Otsuka has the beer on ice already. There is a rumored potential poker game as well.

Here are the rules:

  • Teams of 3 (one team with 4 if Dave is there)
  • 4 innings each
  • 3 outs per inning, bat 2 innings in a row
  • Winner is team with most cumulative runs scored
  • Start with 1-1 count
  • Run bases like real game
  • Team names are optional but encouraged
  • Wagering, sidebets and trash talk are permitted and encouraged

Team 1
Martin
Bobis
Trout
Melchiorre (Dave gets a pinch runner each time)

Team 2
Fortier
Radtke M
McDonnell

Team 3
Danielsen
Otsuka
Flannery

Team 4
Radtke S
Lipsey
Hoglund

Dear Dead Cougars

Dear Dead Cougars,

It is with regret that I must inform you that we will not be playing the Brown Stars tomorrow night. They could not field enough players. Greg said it best, "We would've killed them. They only have 4 guys who want to play in a game -- we have more than that showing up for practices at 7am. Screw them, we've won 2 of our last 3."

It is with much joy and happiness that I must inform you that we are out of the cellar - see the link.
http://www.wilmettepark.org/sports/league_details.cfm?lsportid=3&lLeagueId=15

I have contacted Walt Keefe, captain of Team Orange, to see if we can get a scrimmage in at 6:45pm. This will be a true test of our improvement if we are able to get a game together with the best team in the league.

I will keep you updated.

Scott

Out of the Cellar

Yup, this is the title of the killer 1984 album from Ratt. Why mention such an awesome album? I love glam metal, the 80's and the Cougars and on Tuesday night at 6:45pm we have our chance to get out of the cellar and take sole possession of 10th place.

We play the Brown Stars in the first of three position games (still not exactly sure what position games are but I think the results will help seed the playoffs).

A few interesting facts. The Dead Cougars have the same record as the Brown Stars at 1 win and 9 losses. The Brown Stars only victory is against us. They slaughtered us 11-0 on May13th. Of their 9 losses, they have been slaughtered 7 times. Of our 9 losses, we have been slaughtered 8 times.

We must win.

This is a big rematch for us. On an 80's note, we need a rematch like Sugar Ray and Duran in 1980. No need to pull a Beaver and mimic Sugar Ray's taunting and goading. A windmill punch with a left and a hard shot with a right will do fine. I want the Brown Stars to utter the immortal words "No Mas, No Mas."

If anyone is up for an early morning practice this weekend, let me know and I will organize it. Also, I can get Joe D. back out as well.

Not This Tuesday

It used to be that we struggled during the 1st inning of every game – now it's the 7th. That is progress. Going into the 7th we were behind 10-6 to the second best team in the league and they found every hole and pummeled us for 10 runs. We scored one in the bottom of the inning and the final score was 20-7. It was a much closer game than the score reveals. Like last game, there were many highlights.

· Flannery sliding at home plate and falling short by about a foot for the last out of the game looking up at the ump and indicating he was safe. Tim also had a great unassisted double play.

· Our resident dentist getting picked off first was a beauty (that will cost you in kangaroo court next year). Phil showed off his range and great arm in the outfield – who knew? Phil is throwing his body everywhere and is hoping Brooks Brothers carries blood free pants so his knee doesn't soak through.

· Bobis played an excellent 2B featuring a line shot that tripled the size of his left nipple.

· As I was leaving the house for the train I heard some noise at the park and walked over. Trout was still there debating the ump about what constitutes the baseline.

· Martin once again was a spark plug out of the box to get us on the board with an early lead.

· Danielsen hitting our team's first triple of the season. Also, it was great to have Kristen joining the Cougars postgame activity.

· I really enjoyed the 4 or 5 Radtke to Radtke putouts. Marc played a flawless 1B. BTW, Marc, the dog's name is Chase not Chuck.

· I did not enjoy getting my wind knocked out as I dove for a putout at 3B. I had the dirtiest shirt award until Flannery's headfirst slide.

· Lipsey with a pulled hammy covering tons of ground and showing off the accurate gun holstered to his shoulder.

· Otsuka also with great catches and throws and a featuring sweet throw for a putout at 3B.

· Oxer hustling out a great hit and throwing another top notch postgame. Jeremy is now the official 5 hour energy supplier (dealer, distributor, enabler - you choose the word). http://www.5hourenergy.com/

· Melchiorre getting compliments from Grandpa's on a great pitching performance. Although Dave would have like the umpire to share that same opinion.

· I think we have a following – lots of wives out there. Cougars dig Cougars! (Otsuka's coined phrase - he has already trademarked it and shirts will be on sale next game).

· We are gaining a following outside the Cougar family as well! We have neighbors, friends and other teams all rooting for us. It was great to have a Flynner join us for a nightcap and have him and Trouter share the leprechauns in Vegas story.

I have called and emailed the park district and still have no idea what the scoop is for next week. I do know that we are drinking Otsuka's beers at Fortier's house. I will keep you updated.

Any Given Tuesday

The Dead Cougars are alive! We did it -- we beat the Misfit Beavers 13-12. Now that was true Chicago 16-inch softball. Lots of runs, great plays, unreal hustle on the basepaths, jawing with the opponent, and a tension filled 7th.

I have no idea where to begin. As Danielsen put it at the postgame, for most of our games, the discussion is about one good play we had, but after this game, there were more good plays than we could remember.

Even the day after, it's still a blur.

Should I begin with the fact that we scored more runs in one game than we have in the entire season?

Or Lipsey lighting the fuse with a solid hit on the first pitch of the game and motoring around to score on Martin's hit?

Or Martin switch hitting, doing his Brooks Robinson impersonation at 3B and setting the tone for a scrappy game by tagging and somehow scoring on an infield pop out?

Or Danielsen hitting a ground rule double to the opposite field?

Or Bobis coming through with clutch hit after clutch hit?

Or Melchoirre pitching a great game with sweet high arcs and helping his cause with an RBI single?

Or Fortier's flawless shortstop play?

Or how about Dr. Phil getting body slammed and coming back to get the final out?

Or the ump calling their SS a fuc*ing a**hole (which he did midgame, and to which they responded, "That is the only call you made right all night!")?

Or how about Julie being called a f'ing whore by their first baseman?

Nope, none of that will suffice. The way to begin is to let you know that I woke up this morning after 5 hours of sleep, very sore, slight headache, dehydrated, rough throat, in my uniform, smelling of sweat, bug spray and beer, walked down the stairs and looked at our mantle over the fireplace and next to our wedding picture (taken 13 years ago today) and a crystal vase there sits the game ball and the cork to the bottle of champagne.

Now that is a good feeling!

Our bats were alive. Everybody put a good swing on the ball. Right field, left field, hard grounders, line shots. I would venture to say that we did Joe D. proud last night.

Our defense was stellar and almost flawless. The highlight of our defense was the fact that we made the correct throws every time and did not let them take the extra base. We even made a couple putouts at the bases, most notably when Lipsey gunned down a runner at third with Martin calmly applying the tag.

Our baserunning was aggressive. We took the extra base at every chance, hustled and beat out what should have been routine outs and even had Hoglund doing the Cowboy Dance during a rundown.

Speaking of baserunning, Phil looked like he hit a brick wall when their 400 pound first baseman put his shoulder into him as he was crossing first base and knocked him sideways. Although the Beavers had arms as big as sewer pipes hanging from their sides, I was ready to throw hands right there. Thankfully the ump kicked him out of the game, which gave him ample time to sit his ample a*s on the bench and plead with the park district guy that the ump sucks and all he did was lean in to catch the throw. He was really just an innocent victim, right? At which point, Julie couldn't hold her tongue and had to call, "That is such bull!" Then one of their girlfriends let the park district guy know that the ump shouldn't call their guy an a**hole. "Then they shouldn't act like a**holes!" is what came out of my little wife's mouth. "Shut up, fuc*ing whore," is apparently how their victimized first baseman responded to that. As she said after the game, you can take the girl out of the south side, but you can't take the south side out of the girl. Joe D. said to play angry and I guess that extends to the wives as well.

This being the Dead Cougars going for their first win, of course, it wouldn't be easy. We entered the bottom of the 7th with a 13-6 lead. But the Beavers started finding the narrow gaps in our defense and came storming back to make it 13-12, putting runners on the corners with two outs. After Lipinski's brief discussion with the ump to figure out if the ejected Beaver's spot in the lineup had come up, their left handed power hitter hit a long drive down the right field line. In a turn that can only be considered poetic justice, Phil raced over to the line, camped under the ball and squeezed it to seal the victory.

Melchiorre came through with a postgame fitting for the occasion. Beer on ice, pizzas fresh out of the oven and a perfect setting on the front porch. I was happy that I was able to pop open those bottles of Wilmette's finest bubbly and now won't be haunted by them every time I open my fridge. As one Cougar put it, the beer tastes better after a win. As another said, the Cougars are undefeated in July. And as Flannery put it, "When you consider the euro, there are four distinct reasons for its increase in value, number one..." (No word on whether the Beavers were having a similar discussion at their postgame.)

Huge props to Jen and Julie, our two fans (or witnesses as Greg called them). It was a great night and well-deserved for a great bunch of guys. I was grateful that Oxer was able to make it out on his daughter's birthday, and I wish Trout and my brother could have been there (although with their enthusiasm we may have spent the postgame behind bars), but hopefully this is the first in a long line of Cougar victories.

(Thanks to Julie and Greg for some editing, text and memory help.)

Dead Cougars vs. Misfit Beavers

The Cougars are all in tonight - everyone will be there.

We play the Misfit Beavers, which is a team with only 2 wins but they score a handful of runs each game. I will be out there by 8:30.

Joe D. checked in with me yesterday and wants an update after the game. Let's make him proud!

For those of you that have your assets in cash and are looking for a diversified investment, well, RBI pictures is looking for investors. Take a peek at the trailer for Sprinkle the Infield, a movie about Chicago 16-inch softball. I think we need to start gambling on our games.

See you tonight.

High Arcs

An arc is a curved part of a circle, which of course is the same shape as a zero. Given the big zero in our record, we need to smash some high arcs.

I have had a few requests for a Saturday practice. Sounds good. I am available from 7-9 if anyone else is interested. Let me know.

Game Recap

Joe said to play angry. Guaranteed that'll be me next week. Thank goodness I am not married to softball because I went to bed angry. If anyone needs me over the weekend you will find me at the cages.

We lost 10-0. Last night was the first time that all Dead Cougars were at a game. There were some good improvements on offense and defense, but we obviously need to work on each aspect a bit more.

The Misfit Beavers await us next week for a 9pm game. Dave "Juan Valdez" Melchiorre is in charge of drinks. Dave, please be sure to bring a copious amount of beer - not coffee.

"That's why the old guys beat the younger teams."

"That's why the old guys beat the younger teams."
-Coach Joe addressing the team on Sunday morning.

This quote really addresses the fact that playing a smart game is just as important (if not more important) as being athletic. Here are the notes from practice on Sunday. It was a productive session and we will give a refresher course to the folks that were not there. My favorite part was playing soft toss with the rain and lightning (see picture). I will send out the videos later today. Joe is copied on this email. I traded emails with Joe this morning and he wishes us luck on Tuesday and we need to let him know how it went.

Hitting:
· weight back, push off the back leg
· arms back in your stance
· get the arms extended in the swing
· keep the head steady like the Golden Bear
· look at the defense and see what they're giving you
· with 2 strikes go with the pitch and an 80 percent swing, don't try to pull it
· if you can't hit a high arching pitch "tomahawk" it
· if you like a low pitch stand back in the box, higher upfront in the box
· step toward where you want to hit it
· when going to the right side, a) wait till the ball is passed you, really wait, and then wait some more, b) don't break the wrists (you will on the follow through, but don't try to), 3) step toward right field
· productive outs to move the runners is ok and hit the ball to the right side with runners on 1st and 2nd

Bats:
· swing the heaviest bat you can as long as you don't sacrifice bat speed
· a lighter bat will give you more control, which is important when going to right

Pitching:
· if the guy is trying to pull the ball, step toward 1st base and pitch him outside
· if he's going to right step toward 3rd and try to jam him
· crossover step off the rubber
· potty shot style pitch

Defense:
· on high infield spinners try to "alligator clamp" the ball right hand on top of left hand.

Joe wrote me this morning and gave us another tip. "One more thing that could make the difference between winning and losing. On defense, just because a ball is not hit to you, you still have a job to do, and that is to back up a base in case of an overthrow. I have seen teams lose just because of one bad play like this where nobody backed up the base and the ball got away and the winning run scored."

Attitude:
· play the game a little angry
· bust chops after the game
· "kangaroo court" - charge fines for bad plays

"No good softball player wants to play for a lousy team."

"No good softball player wants to play for a lousy team"
- Mike Royko

We are all set for practice Sunday at 7:15 am at Howard. I'm fired up and our swing coach is looking forward to it as well. I have spoken and traded emails with him about the practice. I told him that I envisioned him giving us some general tips followed by us taking some swings and him giving any feedback or tips. He suggested that if we have a digital camera with movie mode, we could analyze your own swings based on his tips. I have a camera that I can bring out there and email the clips out.

Joe D (as I now affectionately call our swing coach although he doesn't know that yet) told me he will be wearing his black and white Grumpies jersey and black cap. Now, I am not sure if he told me this because he wants to be sure I can locate him in the wee hours at spacious Howard Park or if he just takes great pride in the 16-inch game and his team. I am going with the latter.

As I said earlier, Joe is not an official 16-inch softball swing coach. He has a full-time job, loves 16-inch softball and teaches golf in his spare time. I found him by working the web for about a week. Well, I am a salesman at heart so I put his two extracurricular activities together and contacted his to pitch him on the idea. Even though he hasn't done anything like this before, he loved the concept. If he continues this new profession, I plan to be his booking agent.

In preparation for Sunday and to get you into Joe D's mind and understand what I believe to be his strong affection for the 16-inch game, I will share with you a few items to get rolling.

First, a bit a background about softball. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Softball The two most enlightening passages are the following. 1. In Chicago, where softball was invented, it remains traditional to play with a ball 16 inches in circumference. This larger ball is generally softer (sometimes called a mush ball). When using a 16-inch ball, the fielders do not wear gloves or mitts. 2. Stealing in 16-inch softball is severely restricted, as a runner may only steal the base in front of them if it is open, and if they are thrown at, à la pickoff move or snap throw. This results in many inexperienced players being thrown or doubled off when they attempt to advance on a wild pickoff at another baserunner. For this second tidbit I may have to edit the Wikipedia page to name this "pulling a Dead Cougar."

Second, you must watch this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpuXfcx0pRU Mike Royko was a great writer and a hero to most Chicagoans for sticking up for the common man and his biting commentary. He loved his city, his booze and his 16-inch softball game. From Wikipedia: "He was also fervently devoted to 16-inch softball and was inducted into the Chicago 16-inch Softball Hall of Fame shortly after his death, an honor Royko's family insists he would have considered as meaningful as his Pulitzer."

Staying on the Royko track, when we started this team our tagline would have been "Sammy, get another round!" Now we have added, "No good softball player wants to play for a lousy team."

See you out there.

Swing Coach

We are 0-7 and need help. Our defense is slowly improving and will get better over time the more we get out there to play and practice. Our hitting is a different story. We have trouble getting consecutive hits, which translates into zero run production. If you take away our 6 run game vs. SLAM, we have 5 runs in 6 games. Not good. Put another way, we scored 45% of our total runs in the first inning vs. SLAM. We play Gullivers this week and although they only have 1 win, it looks like they've been pretty competitive in most games.

I have said a few times that I started the team for social reasons but I am very competitive. Man, it felt great to get those runs against SLAM as well as going 8 innings against the Chieftons. We need to put those performances on a repeat cycle and come out with a W.

By searching the internet over the last week, I have found ourselves a 16" swing coach. He has been playing 16" softball for more than two decades. He has not officially been a swing coach for softball but is a golf instructor in his spare time. Put together his long career in softball and his teaching skills and I think I have helped this guy find a new market.

He can come out early Sunday morning and give us an hour or so clinic. I suggested 7:00 or 7:30 am and he is fine with that. You may give up a bit of sleep, but I figure the earlier the better so you don't miss out on family time (plus we are guaranteed a field). This clinic is on my dime and I want to know who can make it.

Shoot me an email today and let me know so I can gauge interest. If you think I'm nuts, you can let me know that too.

0-7

We played the 3rd place Brew-Ha's last night and lost 16-0. We had some hits - just not consecutively. I thought the donut that Bobis brought would help us in the on-deck circle as well as at the plate. Maybe we need a sledgehammer ala Big Frank. Dave and Marc tried to pull a Dead Cougar on our opponent with men on first and second but being an experienced team they did not fall for it.

The good news is that the alley weather was great and the beers were cold. Flannery shared with everyone his theory against taking a pitch/walk, which is compelling. We also shared some good Vegas stories - Trout wins on that front.

Gullivers is our next opponent (6:45 game). Not including last night, they are 1-4 so we should have a shot. The champagne is at the ready.

Saturday night at Nevin's Pub promises to be a good time. Pop Rocks (featuring Melchiorre) will be playing there for a charity benefit. Julie and I will be there.

The Dead Cougars Can Play Eight Innings!

This week's update is brought to you by - DaMoJoe Magic Beans Coffee! I am enjoying a few cups of the Magic Blend this morning. The backstory is that my kids think Melchiorre is a superstar.

First, they see this most excellent performer onstage at the McK Variety Show in all of his awesomeness and they end up singing the S'mores and the Grill Daddys song (Steak and Chicken! Frankfurters too. We do the T-Bone two step. Yes we do.) for weeks and now months. Heck, he even had a page in the show's program honoring his achievements. Then, Julie and I reminded the kids that he plays lead guitar and sings at times for Pop Rocks and his status went up even higher. So the season starts and the kids come out to one of the first early games and they realize that this same cool guy is the also pitcher for the DC's (I think my own power ranking went up for that) and the kids are beside themselves. Finally, to round out his Renaissance Man persona, I find out that Dave roasts his own coffee as a side business. Cup number two has been consumed already this morning and on to cup three for the game update.

Buy your very own at DaMoJoeBeans@gmail.com.

I am going to try and get DateACougar.com to sponsor next week's update. Guaranteed that I will not be testing that product out.

Three cups of coffee are needed when the postgame lasts just past midnight and we were so fortunate that Mr. Lipsey supplied us with such a wide variety of beer.

We lost the game 4-2 in eight innings against The Chieftons. These kids were a mirror image of our team except that we are old enough to shave. We were the home team and only let up one run in the first inning, which has been our Achilles heel. We came back soon after and tied it up and were even ahead for a bit. They tied it up and we went to overtime. They scored two in the top of the eighth and we pooped out. We just didn't have the stamina or the swings in the end. Eight innings for us is basically a doubleheader.

Our hitting was anemic at times but we did have some nice hits that did fall for us. We played outstanding defense highlighted by Otsuka's left field heroics. He must have had seven or eight balls hit out there and he was flawless - running, diving, jumping - and catching every ball. Both Otsuka and Lipsey had line shots over their heads that they each caught and left them looking italicized in the air while making the catch. My little brother played an impassioned first base and even caught a ball one handed. My guess is that Little Rads (as he is known on the South Side) has no voice this morning because of his King Kong enthusiasm over at first base. Melchiorre has had enough pub in this update but, simply put, he is quickly becoming an all-star.

Our highlight of the game would absolutely make the SportsCenter Plays of the Week. We got snookered last week by the Hitmen with the ol' man on first and second pickoff play. We decided in the pregame that Melchiorre and Little Rads would "pull a Dead Cougar" on the Chieftons if the situation was right. They had first and second with no outs and the game was tied in the top of the sixth, I believe. Dave throws it to Marc, Marc lets it get past him, the runners advance (with the guy on second running all the way home and then into the dugout), Marc throws it to Flannery who has everyone screaming at him to tag everything in sight - runners, bases, the pitching rubber - anything (see, we knew we wanted to run the play but never talked about how to actually execute it). Flannery takes care of business and all of a sudden we have two outs and get the next guy for the the final out of the inning - it was huge!

In the end, we couldn't close the deal (coffee is for closers according to Alec Baldwin but I will be enjoying cup number four soon). We should be proud for our improvements.

A couple of postscripts:

Huge props to my wife and sister-in-law for encouraging Greg and I to leave our MI vacation and drive three hours to play in the game.
Great to have the Coach (Bobis' dad) out for the game and the postgame.

We really need more bp. I may send out an email to get some swings in this weekend. Also, heard from Melchiorre that another team in the league hired a batting coach a few years ago and they significantly improved. I am signing the DC's up for that next year.

Next week, I have Lipsey and Fortier out with Lipinski in charge of the brews. Speaking of brews, we play the Brew-Ha's at 8pm. Let me know if you are in or out next week.

The Dead Cougars Can Win This Week

You heard it here first! We are playing The Chieftains, which is the other expansion team this year. They are 1-3 with zero runs in their three losses. Our advance scout told me that they are a young team with inconsistent hitting and fielding. The Chieftains advance scout tells me we are an old team with inconsistent hitting and fielding. We will be just a bit smarter than them out there and come home with a W.

Everyone send me a quick email and let me know if you are in or out for the game on Tuesday (8:00pm start). I only have Lipinski out so far.

Lipsey is in charge of the adult beverages.

Game on!

Cougar/Hitmen Highlights

This was a message from Bobis for the game against the Hitmen that I could not attend.

Rads - here are the highlights from the Hitmen vs. Cougars.

In the bottom of the 4th, Hoglund got a hit to lead off and Oxer got on by fielder's choice. Martin gets a hit, Oxer to 2nd. Trout gets a hit and Oxer, rightly tries to score, and BOWLS OVER THE CATCHER ON THE PLAY AT THE PLATE!!, but is out for not sliding (plus the guy made a great tag). I never would have predicted that Oxer would be the Pete Rose and not the Ray Fosse in a play at the plate collision. Martin moves to 3rd, Trout to 2nd. Fortier gets a double and 2 runs score. At the end of the inning we're down 8-2.

In the top of the 5th we get 2 outs, but then there's a high fly to CF. Trout and Hoglund converge and the ball drops, guy gets a double and Trout thinks he breaks his finger.

I lead off the top of the 5th with the pressure to score to keep the game going. I hit a hard grounder to the 2B side of SS, no play, so I am on first. Marc gets a hit to LF and we've got first and second nobody out.

What happens next will go down in Dead Cougars history.

Marc takes his lead at first and the pitcher for the Hitmen tries to pick Marc off. He throws the ball away. Danielsen, who's coaching first, starts waving his arms, Marc breaks for 2nd and I break for 3rd. As I'm standing on 3rd the Hitmen tag out Marc, throw to 3rd and tag me out, double play. Basically I can't advance because they didn't make a play on me and Marc can't advance because 2B wasn't open, so we're both out. We end up getting a third out and the game was over. Unf'ingbelieve-able.

After the game we talked with the Santa Claus ump and clearly we made a rookie mistake.

You missed a hell of a game. I can't wait until next Tuesday.

Demented and Sad, But Social

Ah, the profound words of John Bender from The Breakfast Club. This could have been our team name.

Speaking of movies, it is like Groundhog Day every Tuesday night and Wednesday morning for me. We lose a game, have a great postgame and I can't sleep. I have realized that it is not the losing that contributes to my lack of sleep , but rather, the one or two too many beers.

For those of you not present, we lost the game 11-0 and set a league record for quickest game time. We let up 6 runs in the first inning and held them to 5 more over the next four innings. Melchiorre's lofty pitching was a highlight as we had many popups and ground balls during the game (some of which were actually caught). Hitting was not a highlight with Otsuka having our only hit.

I will take full credit for having such a great postgame. This is not because we had it in my backyard. It is because much of the chop busting centered on my overthrow to my brother at 1B that landed in Lake Michigan, which my niece had to retrieve (and was painfully viewed by a wife, a good friend, two sisters-in-law, two offspring, and four nieces and nephews). I may change my mind about my demotion because that would leave everybody without any comedy material.

The "two" many beers for me was my walk back to Howard with a plastic cup and a couple of pops in my hoodie to see the Hitmen play Keefe (Team Orange). We have something in common with the Hitmen - we both had 17 dropped on us in an inning by Team Orange.

We play the Hitmen next week. Now that I'm done with my one month professional retirement, it figures I have to be in NY for work next week and miss this game. The Hitmen are a great bunch of guys and I'm sure it will be a good postgame in the alley.

Let me know if you are in or out next week.

Fortier, you are the beer vendor next week.

Weekend Scrimmage

The Dead Cougars can score runs! We just need to score more than the other team. The defense is getting better as well. Although personally, after waking up Wednesday morning at about 4:30 with a slight hangover and dehydration from staying out in the alley too long and unable to get back to sleep, my first thought was about the two errors I made at SS. It was then I realized I need to get a real life.

So, in that spirit, I talked with a few folks on our team as well as the Howard Park Hitmen about a weekend scrimmage and there is interest on both sides.

Shoot me an email and let me know if you can make a 1:00 game time on Monday.

Softball Housekeeping

A few housekeeping notes...

First, and most importantly, I need all of you to send me an email with your status for tomorrow night's game. Are you in, out or on the DL. This will help me with the lineup so we do not forfeit and I can schedule equal playing time tonight and over the long haul.

The game is at 6:45 so we can be there early to warmup on one of the fields. I will be there by 6:00 or 6:15.

We play the Brown Stars who are 0-2 and also who lost to Walter Keefe 15-1 last week. Good defense should help us get a victory. Keep the ball in front of you at all positions and don't make that extra throw. Cutoff men and other infielders can help with this by yelling out the base to throw to, which is usually second base. Otherwise our adrenaline will have us throwing it over the backstop and the runners will take the extra base leaving us without a force out. It is rare that we will make a successful tag out - it is too difficult in 16".

Our final official score last week that was posted on the website was down to 35-1 from 38-1, so we have that going for us. Our comical score coupled with a kid bedtime-friendly start has tickets for tomorrow night's game almost sold out. Wives and children will be rooting us on and we can't let them down. Ignoring the advice from the "Marriage for Dummies" book I was given at our wedding, I will not be taking my lovely wife out for a birthday dinner tomorrow night. Rather, I have invited her to the game and told her that if she leads some cheers, then maybe I would offer her a postgame beer.

Speaking of beers, Mr. Danielsen - you are up on the alphabetical list for postgame beverages. We will most likely have a few in the left field picnic area of Field 2, which is also commonly referred to as the Washington Street alley.

Lastly, a few years ago the headline in a WSJ center story was "My Tivo Thinks I'm Gay." Well, my current headline would be "Gmail Thinks I'm a Young Stud Looking for an Older Woman." You see, Gmail is free because they post ads to the right of your email. The ads are based on the text in each specific email. Well, it turns out a cougar is not only a cougar but is also refers to an older woman, usually in her 40s-60s who pursues younger men in their 20s or early 30s. I must give thanks to Wikipedia and dateacougar.com for this information. The upside of this is that I learned the "half-your-age-plus-seven" rule for socially acceptable relationships. Backing into this for Melchiorre, Dave can date someone who is 90. Sweet.

"Wow, you have a lot of work to do to get better!"

"Wow, you have a lot of work to do to get better!"
- Miranda Radtke, upon hearing the final score.

What a memorable game! We may have set some Wilmette Park District records. For the three teammates not there yesterday, let's just say that we are 0-1 and that after our bye week we won't be any worse.

We played Walter Keefe & Sons, last year's league champs, and they promptly came out and dropped a 17 spot on us in the first inning. Even though it is not clearly evident from the score, the good news is that we steadily improved throughout the game with a final score of 35-1. The high points for the Dead Cougars were keeping them scoreless in the fourth and our RBI in the fifth.

I just checked the schedule and we won't see them again until the playoffs. Seriously, everyone makes the playoffs and we could see them again. My opinion is that they belong in a different league. The only revenge we can have is to not use this company for any general contracting business. In fact, I may make a few biting user comments on the websites of the BBB or Angie's List.

There were a number of calls for more practice. I suggest Saturday morning at 9:00 and again on Tuesday night at 6:45. We can also make the practice on Saturday morning at 8:00 and Tuesday night at 9:00. Whatever time we choose, we plan to be out there for more than an hour. As always, come if you can and leave when you want. Send me a note with what works for you.

It is so hard to do (I'm guilty too) but we need to not make that extra throw. It is almost impossible to catch this ball with two hands and make a tag anyway so we are much better off throwing it to the cutoff man or second base to keep a force play in tact.

Another roster note, my brother-in-law Greg Otsuka, owner of our sole RBI, is now a full fledged member of the team and not just an alternate. So the ante has been brought down again to $53. For those of you that have paid, I owe you a few bucks.

Walter Keefe had an entire cheering section and we had not a single fan. Not that any of us cared last night. There is some nice symmetry with our fanless drubbing and the anniversary of Lee Elia's rant. Here is the unedited version for your pleasure.

Practice Update

Well, a good practice was had on Saturday morning. Martin was hungover, Bobis has a sore arm, Fortier ripped up his hands, Lipinski brought us our team mascot (Frisco), Danielsen can hit a ball over the trees, Hoglund realized they don't play this type of ball in Cali, I have no idea how McDonnell will continue his dentistry practice with a hand that will eventually be wrapped in gauze from a line drive injury and I suffered a skinned leg from sliding into second base (safely). Seriously, so long as we play good and smart defense, we should be just fine.

A few housecleaning items:

Like with the activities for kids, someone needs to bring the postgame snack. We will get the schedule soon but I do know Bobis is up first for bringing the beer on 04/29 since we will go in alphabetical order.

We have had our first roster move. My brother-in-law, Otsuka, has been moved to the practice team and will be there for us when we are shorthanded. My brother, Marc, has been moved up to first team and is fired up to travel from the south side each week for the games.

One of my main goals in the league is to not forfeit a game. For the first game I know that Danielsen and Fortier will not be there. Let me know if you will be not be there on the 29th.

The request for a couple more practices will be heeded. We will definitely have one Saturday from 8-10. Show up when/if you can and leave when you want. The reason for the early and longer time is because I know a few people can only make it before 9 and some are probably only waking up at 9. Any other weekday night is fine with me and I suggest Wednesday at 6:30. Let me know your interest (or lack thereof).

The team name name still needs to be chosen by tomorrow. Here are the entries: Off Together, Pop Outs (or Pops Out), Balls Deep, Tuesday Night Hall Pass, Dead Cougars, Slaughter Rule Clinchers, Big Balls in Town, Pop Flops, Have Nots, Batmen, Louisville Sloggers, Sons of Pitches, Four Baggers, Clinchers, and Pop Tops. I was liking Off Together because it made me laugh. But then Fortier said that what if our opponent is about to beat Off Together and then come from behind and get us in the end, and I started liking some other names better. Let me know.

16" Softball League

The last time I assembled a 16" softball team we went undefeated and won the championship, although that was in the 6th grade. Like I have mentioned to a number of you already, the main goal with this team is to get a night out, be relatively competitive and quaff a few cold ones after the game.

We will have one game per night on Tuesday nights and the games are between 6:30pm and 10:00pm at Howard Park. The league starts April 29th and ends August 12th. We have 13 on the roster and need to field 10 each game. A number of people travel for business and we have summer vacations as well as other family stuff, so just in case I have 3 alternates who will not be on the official team but can fill in if needed.

The cost for the league is $800 and per person is is about $61.50. I will submit the roster and money in the next few days and you can pay me the entry fee in the next couple weeks. Also, once I get the rules I will forward them along.

A few people have asked about having a practice or two before the first game because they have never played 16" or it has been a while (1991 for me). If anyone would like, I am available this Friday after 5:30 or Saturday until 3:00. At a minimum we need 3 people and we can be done in an hour. We can try for Friday at 6:00 or Saturday at 9:00 or 1:00. Let me know your availability.

We already have a pitcher (Melchiorre), which is one of the toughest slots to fill and if anyone else has a desired position just let me know. Otherwise we can figure it out at a practice/game. We also need a team name so I am happy to hear any suggestions.
