Heroic, Humbled, Hungry

On a sunny and steamy evening, the Cougars had a tripleheader.

HEROIC

Our first matchup was against Valley Lodge on Field 2.

The Cougar defense let up a lone score in the top of the first and other than a double by Joker we were silent in the bottom half.  Villains lead 1-0.

Our defense was solid in the second inning and we held them scoreless.  In our half, JD led us off with a single followed by a Li’l Rads walk.  Strong Coffey tied it all up with the mightiest of swings on the top sixteenth of the 16-inch ball and it went about sixteen inches in front of the dish.  As the catcher threw it to first base, JD was already on his way from second base to the plate to score.  All square 1-1.

Cougars mirrored the previous inning and held the opponent to zero in the third as well.  In our frame, we scored five.  All with two outs!  Boom and Rads poked singles and Joker walked.  With the bases loaded Martini tripled to clear the bases.  JD followed suit with his own three of a kind (another triple that is) and Philthy doubled to tally an RBI.  Cougars up 6-1.

In the top of the fourth, Valley Lodge had their top of the order at bat.  They found every hole and gap and scored three.  Lip singled for the Cougars but he was left stranded.  It was getting too close – Cougars up 6-4.

Two hits but no runs for the bad guys in the top of the fifth.  In the bottom, Rads launched a ball to left field and landed on second base because the ball was misplayed.  Next up was Joker who lasered a shot to the shortstop.  After the shortstop threw to first base, Rads raced for third base.  After catching the ball from the shortstop, the first baseman fired it a bit offline to the third baseman so Rads got up and made it home safely.  Cougars getting some insurance up 7-4.

Nada for VL in the sixth.  Not so for the Cougars in the bottom of the sixth.  JD led us off with a single followed by a robust shot by Strong Coffey to score JD (3-3 and 3 runs scored in the game!).  We were not done yet!  With Strong Coffey on first, Lip pummeled a double to the gap scoring Coffey.  Cougars 9-4.

We needed to hold them in the top of the last inning.  After one out, they were starting to rally with runners on first and second.  With two strikes on the batter, Martin lofted the ball and the batter swung and missed.  Diamond Dave, on his toes, saw the runner on first base going with the pitch, and picked him off for the strike ‘em out throw ‘em out to end the rally and the game.  Cougars win 9-4.

Diamond Dave has won games for us on the mound, at the plate, and now behind the plate.  He is our hero.

HUMBLED

Our second game was against Old School.  We had to pick up our 16-inch gear and travel 16 feet to Field 1.

Our first three innings were scoreless with only hits by Joker and JD.  Old School got a couple across the plate to lead 2-0.

In the top of the fourth, Boom led us off with a hit and Martini rapped him in.  Our challenger got it back in the bottom of the inning.  3-1 them.

In the fifth both teams were scoreless.

In the top of the sixth inning, Flandog led off and got on base followed by a Diamond Dave single.  Rads knocked Flandog in with a single.  Cougars fought back and made it 3-2.  In the bottom of the sixth, our wheels came off.  Our foe got us for seven digits to make it 10-2.

We never gave up and in the top of the seventh Philthy, Li’l Rads, Strong Coffey and Lip all rocked the rock and we scored two.  That’s a 10-4 final score good buddy.

The lowlight of the game came in the second inning with the game still in check.  With no outs, the Valley Lodge batter smoked a line shot to the left of Rads at shortstop.  Rads made the clutch catch and tossed it to Flandog for what your captain thought was the third out.  Captain Cougar then bolted off the field faster than Usain.  Um, yeah, get back out on the field, hot shot.  Only two outs.  Ugh.  Humbled.

HUNGRY

The postgame completed our tripleheader.  The Lipinski family provided the awesome sauce to give us a winning record for the night.

Your humble, hungry heroes play Chicken Shack and Tappers in the final two weeks of the season.  The Cougars plan to stay humble and stay hungry as we eat and drink our way to heroic victories.
