As the Cougars like to say,
we made the playoffs for the ninth straight year. Ok, ok, everyone makes the playoffs every
year.
In most years, our record is
at or just below .500 but we are strong in the playoffs. The Cougars cherish the playoffs.
We love the tension, the unpredictability
and the prospect of the fresh start. Because
of our regular season record, we are always the underdog.
On Tuesday we were the six
seed and played the number three seed Templeton Rye.
The goal is always to make
it to the final four on championship night.
Stellar defense and timely
hitting by the entire team helped us accomplish our goal.
First Inning
We were the visiting team and
had first raps. After two quick outs,
Fort, batting lefty and unable to bat from the right side because of a leg
injury, laced a single but was left stranded.
Our opponent had a lone hit.
Scoreless game 0-0.
Second Inning
The Green Team came out with
a fervor and flattened the ball for five straight hits. JD, Bobi, Li’l Rads, Baby Kale and Strong
Coffey gave us a 2-0 lead.
Our opponent had a lone hit.
Cougars 2-0.
Third Inning
Cougars took our collective foot
off the gas pedal and went down 1-2-3.
Pressed the accelerator back
down on defense and put them down 1-2-3.
Cougars 2-0.
Fourth Inning
Joker and Li’l Rads creamed
the Clincher for a couple of singles but we couldn’t get them home.
Templeton Rye grabbed a
couple of hits but did not touch the dish.
Cougars 2-0.
Cougars 2-0.
Fifth Inning
Pastor Ted led off with a
hit and Diamond Dave followed by getting on base. Martini singled to drive in a run.
With one out, our rival had a
man on first and the batter hit a hard grounder to shortstop. The Cougars then executed a wonderfully
perfect 6-4-3, Rads to JD to Li’l Rads double play.
Cougars 3-0.
Sixth Inning
Bobi pummeled a double to
left center but we left him stuck at second base.
Defense still strong and we
put them down 1-2-3.
Cougars 3-0.
Seventh Inning
Going into the top of the
last inning seeking some insurance runs, Strong Coffey led off with a hit
followed by another Pastor Ted single. Rads and Martini each poked hits to drive in
each of the runners.
Templeton Rye had three men
reach base in the bottom of the inning but none made it home. Shutout complete.
Cougars win 5-0.
Next Tuesday is championship
night. The final four matchups are
Cougars (7-9) vs Shack (11-5) playoff rematch from last year and Tappers (9-7) vs
defending champ Miller Time (15-1).
No word play today. Just more softball Tuesday!
