In what turned
out to be the final night of the Cougar softball season, we played our most
spirited ball all year.
The Cougars are always
top-notch in the playoffs.
It was the
Cougars against Gulliver’s in the opener.
After quickly going down 6 - 0 by the third inning, the outlook was dire
and we needed a sense of urgency. The Cougars
buckled down on defense and turned three double plays while not allowing another
run for the rest of the game. On
offense, it was a total team effort and we clawed our way back to a 7 – 6 victory.
The big win earned
us a rematch against our major rival, Chicken Shack. You wouldn’t think that Shack would be our main
foe because they hold the all-time series lead and beat us twice this year in
the regular season. Don’t let the record
fool you. Some of our biggest wins have
been versus Shack, including the playoffs.
We put a scare
into the Shackers with a 4 – 0 lead over the first three innings. They came back strong with four runs of their
own in the bottom of the third to tie it up.
They scratched one out in the fifth inning to take a one run lead. The Cougars came back fighting with two in
the sixth to retake the lead, 6 - 5. In
the bottom the sixth, with their backs against the wall, Shack dropped six
large on us and held us scoreless in the last inning for the 11 - 6 win.

Last night, the
Cougars completed our tenth season. At
roughly 17 or 18 games a season, we have played about 175 games. That also means we have had 175 postgame
parties.
The games last
about an hour. The postgames with our families last two or
three hours.
You tell me,
which is more important?
Over the last
decade, we have created memories on and off the field. Sure, we will all remember a play or a hit
here and there, but what we are certain to remember forever is the warm feeling
of camaraderie in the community.
Softball seasons
come to an end. Friendships last a
lifetime.
