Decade of Friendship

In what turned out to be the final night of the Cougar softball season, we played our most spirited ball all year.

The Cougars are always top-notch in the playoffs.

It was the Cougars against Gulliver’s in the opener.  After quickly going down 6 - 0 by the third inning, the outlook was dire and we needed a sense of urgency.  The Cougars buckled down on defense and turned three double plays while not allowing another run for the rest of the game.  On offense, it was a total team effort and we clawed our way back to a 7 – 6 victory.

The big win earned us a rematch against our major rival, Chicken Shack.  You wouldn’t think that Shack would be our main foe because they hold the all-time series lead and beat us twice this year in the regular season.  Don’t let the record fool you.  Some of our biggest wins have been versus Shack, including the playoffs.

We put a scare into the Shackers with a 4 – 0 lead over the first three innings.  They came back strong with four runs of their own in the bottom of the third to tie it up.  They scratched one out in the fifth inning to take a one run lead.  The Cougars came back fighting with two in the sixth to retake the lead, 6 - 5.  In the bottom the sixth, with their backs against the wall, Shack dropped six large on us and held us scoreless in the last inning for the 11 - 6 win.

(All videos and pictures from last night's action can be found at the bottom of the blog).

Last night, the Cougars completed our tenth season.  At roughly 17 or 18 games a season, we have played about 175 games.  That also means we have had 175 postgame parties.

The games last about an hour.  The postgames with our families last two or three hours.

You tell me, which is more important?

Over the last decade, we have created memories on and off the field.  Sure, we will all remember a play or a hit here and there, but what we are certain to remember forever is the warm feeling of camaraderie in the community.

Softball seasons come to an end.  Friendships last a lifetime.

Playoff Picture

Let's get it out of the way now, the Cougars got slaughtered by Chicken Shack last night.

In a rough game, there were a a few highlights (including Charley's photos below and Julie's postgame spread).

First, last night marked the season debut of Lipinski and Trout.

Dave played his first game in over a year and it was Glenn's first game in two years.  Each went 2-2 at the plate and now batting 1.000.

Trouter also Glenn had a acrobatic catch in the outfield (Video 37:40).  Hard to see but you can hear the cheer!

Melchiorre pitched a fantastic game and we could have played better defense behind him (I'm guilty - my hand is raised high).  Diamond Dave had a perfect pickoff to Li'l Rads at first base that ended a potential big inning (Video 6:59).  The second week in a row with a close play and this one went our way.

JD had two hits with a run scored.  Strong Coffey had two hits and an RBI.

So...we lost the game...but we made the playoffs for the tenth straight year (hint - everyone makes the playoffs).

Going back quickly through the archives, scroll down for the playoff seedings over the last ten years.

In every year but one, we have been seeded sixth or below, including our 2011 championship season.

This year is no different, we are the seven seed and have our first playoff game against Gulliver's next week.  We have beat them twice already this year.  Will we beat them a third time?

With a victory, we face Chicken Shack for the third consecutive week.  Will we stop their two game winning streak this season?

To get our mojo restarted, we will be rolling out our new sponsor next week.

Julie joined Glenn and Dave as all stars last night with pulled bbq chicken sandwiches with homemade bbq sauce.  The sweet night ended with warm berry crisp and ice cream.
